Schools belonged to Catholic Church
Founded in St Mary Primary School in Sandakan, being the oldest school back in the year 1883 under the British North Borneo Company and later funded by the Government through grants.
Other mission schools were built by Mill Hill priests / nuns funded by their own home countries. Labuan’s St Anthony (1940) and St Anne (1937) were built by MHM, funded by England and Holland.
De La Salle brothers came in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s and built the Sacred Heart Primary School, La Salle Secondary School and St Martin.
Franciscan Sister of the Immaculate Conception built Stella Maris Primary and Secondary Schools. They took over from the White Sisters in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
